The east of Singapore is known to be a culinary haven, and Big Fish Seafood Grill is certainly no exception when it comes to good food. Located along the busy Upper East Coast Road, it has garnered a steady stream of patrons who drop by for both lunch and dinner. Run by 2 former bankers, Big Fish has been around since 2004, and has secured itself a pool of faithful followers . Expatriates drop by for take-aways, and the restaurant is very often full on weekends.
The Vibe Big Fish emanates a certain seaside charm with its unique turquoise- coloured furniture that is so reminiscent of the ocean. Tables are separated into booths for more privacy. The predominant use of wood in the décor also reminds one of a countryside home, cosy and comfortable. Pictures of small boats docked at a pier, and fishermen netting their catch, adorn the walls. Diners who prefer to be caressed by the sea breeze can opt for the seats outside and dwell in the presence of the swaying palm trees which line Upper East Coast Road. Either way, get set for a pleasant dining experience.
The Food The restaurant serves a spread of delectable Western-Continental cuisine. Besides the usual seafood items, one can look forward to a selection of pasta and desserts. The lobster bisque($12.95), being a seasonal item on the menu which is not always available, is a starter not to be missed. Rich and full-bodied with the taste of lobster, this creamy soup will leave you hankering for more. If you are not dining alone, a dish to order would be the Grilled Hot Seafood Platter($49.95) which serves 2-3 people. Filled with the usual seafood favourites like mussels, scallops, prawns, and fish, New Zealand perch, accompanied by fragrant butter rice, this is bound to be a crowd-pleaser. The lemon butter and pesto sauces went well with the different items. However, the perch, could have been a more flavourful dish, especially as it is apparently very popular among diners. Another main dish, a cut of Australian Barramundi, was well-presented but mediocre in taste. The meal ended well with the recommended dessert, Warm Chocolate Souffle($9.95), served warm and fluffy under the crust, oozing chocolate. The Traditional Italian Tiramisu($9.95) was light on the palate, and suitable even for children as there was no overpowering taste of liquor.
The Service The restaurant seemed understaffed with only one service staff attending to patrons. However, upon querying, we found out that the owners take on a very hands-on approach to the restaurant and will also help out with service. Despite the apparent shortage of manpower then, we had a pleasant dining experience.
SD Food Advisor's take on Big Fish Seafood Grill The food was agreeable on the whole. The fact that they offer takeaway services as well as a value-for-money lunch set menu priced at $14.95 does warrant some attention. If you are in the mood for seafood in the East, Big Fish Seafood Grill might be a good choice.
