Opened in 2003 and located smack in the middle of the very popular East Coast Park , it is a wonder how Beach Cabana has remained the secret that it is. With a good selection of food and drinks, including alcohol, it has established itself amongst a small community of beachgoers as the perfect location for chilling out and winding down.
The Vibe The cabana itself is camouflaged from prying beachgoers by its foliage. A little stream flows in the perimeter of the dining area, home to little fishes and tadpoles, which provides a therapeutic touch. On a weekday, the area is serene and ideal for couples in their own world; while the boisterous nature of the weekend crowd might be more appealing to larger groups like families. Live DJ entertainment is also available from 7pm till late on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, to spice up the evenings for patrons.
The Food As the charcoal-grill is used mainly for dinner preparations, its location amongst the dining area proves to be a rather smoky decision. Be prepared to end your dinner with a lingering smell of barbeque meat in your clothes or opt to sit in front of one of their high-powered fans, guaranteed to leave you with wind-swept hair.
Must-try main courses will include the Air Flown Rib-Eye ($22) and the Cabana Chicken Chop ($13.50). Even though the rib-eye arrived medium-well when medium-rare was requested, the sizable portion of beef was very tender and well-marinated, catering well to the local palate. The chicken chop, marinated with a special sauce and spices, was a juicy cut with the timing on the grill measured to perfection.
While the meats are praiseworthy, the accompanying sides of greens and baked potatoes can be much improved. Even though the potatoes were warm and smothered with sour cream, artificial bacon bits were used, when real bacon would have been much better.
The Seafood Combo ($24) is on the pricey side, comprising of two prawns, a sizable portion of squid, sambal stingray and butter rice. The squid is a little dry and comes across too tough, while the aromatic rice could be more moist. On the bright side, the succulent prawn is subtly sweet and the sambal stingray, just right on the “chilli-o-meter” without being overly spicy.
With prices for beer starting at $21 per jug, the alcohol does seem expensive for the location. The Singapore Sling ($14), with its gin, brandy, lime and pineapple composition, hits the right spot, but it can really do with more aesthetically-pleasing glasses. The same goes for the tequila, lime and orange in the Tequila Sunrise ($14), except that it is a little weak. Finger foods, such as calamari and fries, are also available to complement your drinks as you enjoy the company of your friends and loved ones.
The Service While the staff was commendably polite and eager to assist with requests, it is also noted that they are not ready with recommendations of their house specialties. As they were busy setting up the area for dinner, it was also tough to get their attention for a glass of water.
SD Food Advisor's take on Beach Cabana Its proximity to the beach has made it a location popular with families on weekends and working couples on weekday evenings. Lifetime membership at the Beach Cabana goes for just $28 and members can enjoy 10% off their bill, a free main course on their birthday and a monthly Members' Night event with special promotions. With such a laid-back concept and delectable food at almost reasonable prices, the place is worth a visit for you to decide if the beachside lifestyle rocks your boat. Just be sure to bring along some insect-repellent.
