With mouthful names from Café Iguana's menu of Mexican dishes, it is a colourful world of tortillas, tequilas, fajitas, chimichangas and other tongue-twisting attempts at mastering the Mexican language. Dive into a merry evening by the Singapore River and be rewarded by a hearty meal of homemade tortillas, a lively crowd and ice-cold tequila cocktails.
The Vibe The cool evening breeze makes it comfortable to dine alfresco while a startling pink and green interior caters more to chill-outs and macho margaritas. (Trust us on this, they are huge and fruity!) With each table clothed in a different colour and napkins distributed in bright hues of red, yellow and green, Café Iguana brings to Clarke Quay, the vibrant culture of Mexico cuisine.
The Food Go fruity on their margaritas ($9.99+++; 50% off at Happy Hour) with a variety of flavours like mango, pink guava, lime, strawberry and soursop to match the day's mood. Served frozen, a glass never fails to perk one up for the evening with a dash of tequila mixed together with it. Pick from starters like a basket of Taco Salad ($8.99+++), or flaming Camarones al Diablo ($14.99+++) as well as Cheese & Mushrooms Quesadillas ($6.99+++). The quesadillas packed rich melted cheese and portabello mushrooms in their thin and crispy homemade tortilla skin, and are served with a tangy salsa dip. Like Singapore's version of roti prata, this Mexican dish is somewhat similar, only healthier and with more flavour.
If the generous portions haven't filled you up already, consider the main course menu like Grilled Prawn Chimichangas ($18.99+++) or Tuna Enchiladas Plato ($19.99+++). Chimichangas served in the size of a rolling pin with cilantro rice at the bottom, tortillas wrapped around rich cheese, vegetables and springy prawns conclude a heavenly and hearty meal, suffice to satiate even the hungriest of stomachs. Equally appetizing is the plato, which dishes out a large cut of tuna, barracho beans as well as cilantro rice. Go creative and create your own Fajitas ($18.99 for a choice of beef) with Café Iguana's ingredients laid out on the table too!
Café Iguana's desserts are just as exotic, if not, tempting. Sautéed Bananas ($8.99+++) served with kahlua -glazed ice cream – homemade by the restaurant – a simple treat yet pleasurable to the palate. Likened to the local's version of goreng pisang (fried bananas), warm and soft banana dipped in melted sugar meets a spoonful of creamy and smooth vanilla ice-cream to form a melt-in-the-mouth concoction to satisfy the palate, senses and soul.
The Service Youthful and full of vigour, endless plates of tortillas emerge from the kitchen and are delivered to an almost full-house worth of patrons in less than a minute. Apart from food service, endless top-ups of ice water and recommendations of menu items to customers, one may suspect staff at Café Iguana run on batteries. Service is still as prompt despite a crowded evening, so one does not have to worry about his or her food being delayed.
The SD Food Advisor's take on Café Iguana For a hearty Mexican meal or a colourful evening of margaritas, Café Iguana is the place to visit. Happy hours and tequila cocktail promotions make one's visit even more worthwhile on top of their reasonably priced menu. However, do be prepared for American-sized servings each time you order a dish – sharing is encouraged, really.
