There is always room for desserts, they say. With Paisley & Cream's cupcakes and light snacks together with coffee to go along, there is more than room for just desserts. The dessert craze around Singapore has spurred Paisley & Cream to churn out their own home-baked cupcakes since their opening in February along bustling Clarke Quay this year. A cosy little corner at The Central advocating “Living life and loving it”, it is not hard to simply sit and stare out at the walks of life whilst sipping away at afternoon tea.
The Vibe This visually-enhanced café sports gleaming white PVC furnishings against deep pink walls, a colour combination sure to appeal to ladies and men alike. Paisley & Cream is not exactly sweet pink, but boasts a pop-art visual that is reminiscent of the 80s. The contemporary outlook of this café is one of sleek, modern and basking in class, with a choice of cosy corners, chic bar stools and intimate gleaming white seats to perch on.
The Food Take a pick from a small, arty-farty looking menu with fancy names adapted from famous artists, writers and singers – not wide in selection but instead simple food that is easy on the taste-buds, stomach and pocket. For the light eaters, perhaps a bowl of salad like Ode on a Grecian Urn ($6.90) filled with fresh greens and chickpeas will be the thing to fill the stomach. Nothing too fanciful, this bowl of refreshing and crunchy greens topped with feta cheese, coupled with a smooth cup of iced Honey Latte ($5.20) would be the perfect afternoon crunch. Topped with golden honey and stirred into a frothy mix, it was a heavenly concoction of milky expresso with a dash of honey at the back of the throat.
There are other simple dishes like Indian Summer ($10), two halves of a tandoori chicken wrap together with cucumbers, tomatoes, yoghurt and masala. “Indian-ish”, one might say, but this easy-to-eat wrap is rather intoxicating to the senses. Another tummy-filler would be Wickedly Wild ($12), a huge serving of spaghetti and wild mushrooms topped with cream sauce. This bowl of pasta is delightfully rich and sticky in texture, coated with smooth cream sauce that one would never be sick of.
Of course, one can always venture up to the counter filled with home-baked Cupcakes ($3 each) with flavours like carrot, vanilla, double chocolate as well as Toberlone. With the Vanilla Cupcake made from real vanilla pods, and Double Chocolate topped with a rich coating of pure dark chocolate, one can expect their cupcakes to be just right, not suffocating sweet like other factory-manufactured ones. Fluffy and served with cream by the sides, the cupcakes are pleasant to the palate indeed, although some may find them a little too rich for personal liking.
The Service Such a cosy café can't possibly demand professional service from their staff. Despite their seemingly inexperienced outlook, dining at Paisley & Cream is still pleasantly comfortable and homely when the café staff is warm and friendly to his or her customers.
The SD Food Advisor's take on Paisley & Cream Stop by to satisfy that sweet tooth before partying the night out at Clarke Quay, or hide away in a cosy corner for a great conversation over coffee – Paisley & Cream is just the spot for such. Moreover, their cute and funky interior design does lure the young-hearted to a cosmopolitan hangout, a place where one ought to be seen lounging around with a cupcake on hand.
