Nestled at the heart of Bukit Chermin Road, PeraMakan at the Keppel Club offers the Peranakan food lover an appetizing affair with a menu crafted from recipes handed down through the generations. Previously located at Joo Chiat where business was brisk beyond imagination, PeraMakan stays true to the Peranakan taste even after shifting to their new premises. One does not have to be a Baba or Nonya to fully appreciate their culinary expertise and their home-style cooking promises to give an ambrosial cultural experience.
The Vibe Peramakan exudes a homely feel with its stylishly embellished white and brown interiors with a splash of pastel colours on the walls. Nonya wares and art works are displayed around the restaurant, beautifully complementing the interior. Surrounded by large glass windows, patrons can enjoy warm sunshine whilst lunching. A spectacular view of Sentosa Island completes the warm and cozy ambience of the restaurant.
The Food PeraMakan offers a comprehensive line-up of Peranakan dishes, the authenticity apparent from the ingredients used to the presentation. Peranakan food aficionados will be spoilt for choice with the wide variety of authentic Peranakan cuisine available on the menu.
Sample old time favorites like the Beef Rendang ($12) and be delighted by the soft beef shin submerged in spicy coconut gravy that simply melts in your mouth. Its extra tender and smooth texture is achieved by simmering the meat for at least a good 3 hours. You can also have rendang with chicken or mutton. Their Penang Nonya Pork Ribs ($12) is similarly cooked to painstaking tenderness and offers a delightful crunch as you munch on the soft bones with the meat.
Try an Ayam Buah Keluak ($14) for a distinctive Peranakan-style dish that combines chicken pieces with kepayang nuts to produce a rich, black sauce. Some may be put off by the murky, ink-like gravy but that is truly a uniquely Peranakan taste that requires some getting used to. If you are one of those who fall in love with the sauce at first taste, then dig right into the kepayang nuts for some deliciously spicy flesh! The sharp, piquant aroma of the nut goes down very well with fluffy, white rice and plenty of the black gravy.
Abandoning the spicy for something lighter and sweeter, the Apom Berkuah ($6), Nonya coconut pancakes served with banana sauce, is not to be missed. Four pretty, little, white pancake rounds with curious blue designs are the stars of this treat. They taste rather plain on their own so go ahead and smother them in the warm banana sauce for an almost luscious and almost fruity pancake that is very, very addictive.
Put a sweet end to the meal with genuine Peranakan desserts. Durian fans will surely get a kick out of the Durian Pengat ($5), a smooth whipped durian served chilled over sweet potatoes and yam. It is an amazing combination of saccharine durian and neutral yam for a balanced taste that won't make you reel in sugar overdose. Or choose to be smitten by the classic favorite of Chendol ($4), which never fails to charm the older generation as it brings back fond memories with the handmade green agar bits. Choose to cool down with their Barley ($2.50) and Sour Plum Drinks ($3.50), or have the Longan and Red Date Tea ($3.50 served hot or cold) to quench your thirst after the meal.
The Service The service crew is generally courteous and is quick to respond when you call for them. The owners of the restaurant being trained in customer service, personally trains the crew to be of good service to their guest. Very warm and accommodating, the service crew will make you feel at home as you dine in the restaurant.
The SD Food Advisor's take on PeraMakan
Despite being tucked inside the greenery of Bukit Chermin, PeraMakan is always jam-packed during lunch and dinners, especially on weekends. The restaurant has a steady flow of customers that prefers their “taste” from the other Peranakan restaurants. So do venture to the place if you want to compare their taste from the other Peranakan restaurants you have been to. A little effort is needed to be able to dine-in though. Driving or taking a cab will be your best option to get to PeraMakan.
