Tucked in a rather secluded corner of Raffles the Plaza, the café offers a quick getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city. Although it is pitched as a Peranakan restaurant, the Peranakan theme is not apparent in the ambience and the food here would be classified as more of a mix of international cuisine.
The Vibe The environment is comfortable and spacious, with a convivial ambience that will set guests right at ease. The restaurant is constantly buzzing with an international clientele of tourists who are mostly hotel guests, and is also patronized by the nearby corporate crowd in the vicinity.
The Food The wide array of cuisine ranging from Japanese to European and Asian, ensure a fair share of cuisine is available to suit the taste buds and preferences of patrons. It is an ideal place for tourists to sample the Asian palette and equally enjoyable for the locals to savour the piquant and familiar tastes of the national cuisine. One of the favourites would be the sashimi selection which consists of air-flown items such as tuna and salmon, as well as scallops, prawns and lobsters, all served fresh and chilled at the buffet table. In line with the Asian and Peranakan concept of the restaurant, famous dishes like Nasi Goreng (fried rice), Sweet and Sour pork and Slipper Lobster in Black Pepper Sauce are definitely praiseworthy. The health conscious at heart, can always head towards the salad bar for a pick of fruits, potato, chicken or seafood salad, and even the Peranakan “salad” Achar. The dessert section which occupies a third of the buffet spread, is one tempting array not to be missed. Amongst choice picks is the Durian Pudding, which is a lusciously thick durian puree made from fresh durians and best paired off with some gula melaka (brown sugar). Other noteworthy selections include the home made nonya kuehs , cheesecakes and bread and butter pudding not forgetting vanilla and chocolate ice cream, raspberry and pineapple sorbet - desserts that are ever so popular in sunny Singapore .
The service The staff is friendly, attentive and obliging. Used plates are cleared quickly and the tables and surroundings are always kept clean and neat, creating a very pleasant environment to dine in.
The SD food advisor's take on the lunch buffet at Plaza Market Café The non-intimidating casual atmosphere and commendable service standards of friendly staff create an inviting feel for the Plaza Market Cafe, making it a pleasant venue to dine at with a group of friends or family. However, the presentation of the food on the buffet table itself could be slightly confusing as some dishes are either not labeled, or have their labels placed wrongly. Nevertheless, if you are one who is more concerned about how varied the assortment of the buffet spread is, then you might want to try out this restaurant that does offer pretty decent dishes at rather reasonable prices.
