About the restaurant:
Raffles Grill is one of the most legendary restaurants steeped in history of visiting chefs (like Alain Ducasse and the recent WGS summit). The restauran is overly formal, with high ceilings, opulent colonial funiture and fine silverware. However, it it falls short of creating an elegant ambiance. Service is well-trained and professional, but seem to lack experience when it comes to knowledge of the menu as well as when problems occur. For strange reasons, the restaurant is hardly occupied during lunch (only a few tables), and rarely full during the evenings
Ordered Food:
Managed by the 3 start michelin Pourcel brothers, the cuisine presented is best stated as classical french with modern touches here and there. It is also one of the most expensive French restaurants in Singaore. There is a wide variety of dishes presented in the menu, including beluga caviar from the bar.
I started with the speciality-hot smoked atlantic salmon. For reasons why it had the legendary status was unknown to me; it was good but not spectacular. For the main course, I had the lamb with the mushroom canneloni. It was the best lamb dish I had in Singapore. The accompanying mushroom canneloni was pungent in flavor and it was very good. For desert, I had the chocolate croquets with accompanying milkshake shots. The chocoalte croquets were above average but the accompanying milkshakes did not blend with the chocolate.
My verdict:
It's not perfect, but then again its the best you can find in singapore, from my experience of trying almost every european restaurant in the country. The only quam is the prodigiously pricey tabs, although it would really help if you were a raffles cardholder member (50% off for 2 pax, 33% off for 3 pax, 25% for 4 pax, and so on).
