Sri Perdana Gallery
by: Janice Kou

The Sri Perdana Gallery or Galeria Perdana as it is more locally known, is a creative concept born at the hands of former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad. A gallery built with one unique purpose in mind; the Sri Perdana Gallery serves to showcase the many gifts and awards that belong to Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his wife. The array of gifts are amazing, as all of the givers were either Malaysian elites or world leaders from other countries. All of these gifts were collected during Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s reign as Malaysia’s Prime Minister.

An architectural wonder in itself, the design of the Sri Perdana Gallery has obviously been well thought out. The gallery wears an oriental design and its exhibits are displayed creatively in its interior; allowing a feel of harmony that integrates with its prestigious items.

The gallery exhibits are divided into different sections; breaking down into categories of materials they are made of; such as ceramics, copper, pewter, leather, crystals and et cetera. The displays are also differentiated by type, and are laid out in categories of art, games, musical instruments and other related assortments. There are even a couple of prototype and four-wheel drive automobiles that are displayed in grandeur. Because each item has a unique giver and history to it, all the exhibits are tagged and annotated with descriptions.

In totality, all the gifts and awards presented to Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad and his wife, Datin Seri Dr Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali add up to a rather remarkable collection of about 2,500! The Sri Perdana Gallery was basically conceptualized by Datuk Seri Dr. Mahathir, as he believed that the people of Malaysia deserved every opportunity to share in the uniqueness and diversity of the various arts and cultures given by others.

Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir's former residence and a formal entertaining complex is currently the Sri Perdana Gallery. Basking in designs of French influence with inevitable traditional touches, the gallery does not allow the use of cameras and video recordings inside its premises; hence maintaining the exclusivity of its prestigious existence. Professional snapshots of the Sri Perdana Gallery and its magnificent exhibits are already taken on behalf on visitors and can be taken home at affordable prices from the souvenir shop.

Hard pressed to find such ostentatious gifts exhibited under one roof, visitors are advised to take at least and hour or two to browse through the two double-storey buildings that make up the Sri Perdana Gallery. There is much to see and admire outside of the gallery as well; a picturesque landscape is meticulously and artistically drawn around its surroundings.

Entrance fees at a minimal; adults pay RM3 per entry and children above 12 years of age need only pay RM1. For the entire family to enjoy an enriching experience like no other, visit the Sri Perdana Gallery during weekdays on Mondays to Fridays from 10am-5pm, and 9am-6pm on schooling & public holidays. On normal weekends and other public holidays, the gallery is also open from 10am-5pm.
