Discover Petroleum Science in a Fun, Story telling way
by: Janice Kou

Petrosains is located in the midst of bustling Kuala Lumpur and housed within the internationally renowned Suria KLCC, Petronas Twin Towers. The perfect place for all to experience the wonders of science and technology, Petrosains undertakes the responsibility on educating visitors on the involvement of Malaysia in the petroleum industry. One of its aims is also to plant useful and interesting information into the heads of the public; generally creating more awareness of the petroleum industry and the possibility of future career paths.

The only interactive science discovery centre that presents petroleum science and technology in a fun, story-telling way, Petrosains’ concept also embraces all the beginning, current and future aspects of science.

Petrosains is a highly advanced technological museum designed for visitors to interact with all motorized and static exhibits. A fascinating visit that spells fun throughout its scientific journey, visitors proceed on an exploration in stages. Adjourn from The Lobby to the Dark Ride In, followed by an educationally entertaining ride through the passages of Energy, Petrojaya, Geotime Diorama, Science Station 1, Exploration, Galleria, Helicopter Simulator, Oil Platform, Downstream, Molecule Nanoworld, Metre City, Science Station 3, Teater Ungku Omar, Dark Ride Out and Xplorasi.

Visitors can lose themselves in the ever-changing environments inside Petrosains – an endless surprise of discoveries! Walk on through the ever-green Malaysian rainforests into the deep blue tranquility of the underwater world. There is also the Cartoon Village that is as highly colored as it is entertaining for the whole family! The Cartoon Village is where highly advanced technology is seamlessly blended with shadow puppet play (Wayang Kulit) to give us a play by play story of hero Sri Rama and the evil King Rawana and our local hero! Watch how the hero managed to save the petroleum industry that we have today! See also the Sauber Petronas Formula One racing car; one of the many pulse-quickening experiences guaranteed to wow both the young and the old alike. Look out for a dinosaur that amuses children as it stands fiercely poised in its prehistoric environment… singing a song! Also, engage in make-believe and experience the sensation of being in a flying helicopter; experiment around with science demonstrations and venture onto a whole lot more that Petrosains has to offer!

Petrosains also invests valuable time and effort to organize special events that are open to the public. Some of the examples include World Environment Day, World Water Day, Earth Day, World Food Day and F1-related activities. The science centre will be organizing more special events in the near future in relation to festive seasons or special current affairs. Other exciting learning activities include the Petronas StreetSmart interactive exhibition, which will be available at the soonest possible date. Here, visitors will be exposed to different road experiences; how to deal with them and more importantly, how to avoid accidents… safety first! PlaySmart is another that takes the form of a mini science discovery centre and is a fun activity for children. It encourages children to interact in fun lessons while the story of the petroleum industry is told. PlaySmart represents an effective way how Petrosains can reach young Malaysians in the hope of nurturing interest in science and technology.

Towards the end of the Petrosains expedition, the Xplorasi gift shop displays an array of animal-like toys and souvenirs for purchase. There are fun do-it-yourself projects for children to work on and display to their families and friends; packaged science discoveries that all the family can participate in, colorful and anime stationary and more science souvenirs to cater for occasions of all kinds.

To make the most of a Petrosains visit, visitors are encouraged to while at least a few hours to maximize the scientific experience. The science centre is open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 930am to 530pm, Fridays from 130pm to 530pm and on Saturdays, Sundays and Public Holidays from 930am to 630pm. The Petrosains centre is open on all public holidays except on days that Hari Raya Puasa and Hari Raya Haji fall on. Admission rates for adults are priced at RM12 each; rates for children ages 5 to 12 Years are priced at RM4, whereas teenagers need to pay RM7 to enter. To prevent confusion upon entry, bring along a simple identification for easy verification of age. Once visitors get past the gateway, get ready to rumble on the rollercoaster ride… you’d be hard-pressed to look for a similar experience elsewhere!
